Typography is a little bit like wine – insofar as what was once the reserve of connoisseurs and specialists – now everybody has an interest and opinion. Taking it further, Red and white is like serif and sans serif and within these categories there are the different varieties. ABC (anything but Chardonnay) was once the rule and then Pinot Grigio bubbled to the top but as soon as it gets a little bit too popular, there’s a swing away from it. Fonts are the same, whether it’s Helvetica in the sans serif corner or Palatino in the serif corner. Most studios have their favourites, but like people’s favourite poems, these can change.
The wine analogy can go as far as you want to take it. Table wine or a working font? What’s your Champagne font? But here’s something a bit different…
