Roberto is a friend of a friend of mine – and my friend, Vitória Taborda, herself a wonderful illustrator,
forwarded me his details recently. I met him in New York over twenty years ago when he had just
begun designing book covers for publishing houses. He is a designer that uses type in a very quirky way.
Pictured is a cover for a Nobel Lecture by J.M. Coetzee, it’s only 175mm high and 22 pages long.
The cover is hardback wrapped in bookcloth the colour of unbleached linen and onto that is stamped
an illustration of the author in matte black, followed by his name and title of the lecture in silver foil.
The portrait of the author is composed entirely of letters – and only those letters that appear in his
name; j, m, c, o, e, t and z. Beautiful. Check out lots of interesting designs on www.devicq.com
