When it comes to cycling I’m hopeless. There’s a bike alright, but it just leans up against the wall getting rusty. We live on a big hill so it’s OK free-wheeling into town (2 minutes) but you have to push the bike back home (20 minutes) so the rust gathers. But after seeing this video I have decided I’m going to make an effort and not jump into the car to go to the local shop. I know Holland is flat, and the dutch make it look so easy, but still I’m going to try. I gave up nothing for Lent – so that’s it now. Think of the environment – and there’s all that pollution and with the price of petrol the way it is – it’s pedalling from now on. Sure, there’s 13 million Bicycles in Beijing.

The real thing sure beats Spinning Classes, which have caught on with a few people I know. I’m sure they can be a great way to get a vigorous workout – burning calories and keeping you in shape. But you have to have a high tolerance for exercise bikes and being cooped up inside with a chain gang of other sweaty people. This video shows us the way to go – it’s the morning rush hour in Utrecht, the 4th largest city in the Netherlands. 33% of ALL trips in the Netherlands are made by bicycle!
