The Moai “heads” on Easter Island have bodies! As one who was always fascinated by these heads, this came as news to me. There are petroglyphs (that’s rock markings to you and me) that have been preserved below the soil level, where they have been protected from erosion. Some of the heads have even kneeling bodies. The image below is from a previous excavation (source unknown) that shows you the scale of the statues, and how deep they were buried. But is it true that their earlobes were all stretched, a sign of the upper classes?
