When Photographer James Mollison was asked to come up with an idea to highlight the rights of children from different backgrounds from all over the world – he thought of his own bedroom and how significant it was when he was growing up. And so the idea for “Where Children Sleep” was born.
He didn’t just want it to be a book about children that were poor and disadvantaged but he wanted to look at all children from different social and economic circumstances and living in different parts of the world. He photographed the children with a neutral background – on their own as individuals – allowing a generous white border around the portrait and including some text under the image. On the opposite page he photographed the place where that child slept. The impact of this juxtaposition is powerful – and it highlights the different experiences each child grows up with.
