We are all looking forward to the Queen’s visit to Cork at the end of the month. And Raven Design are delighted to be working with our friends in the City Council on the welcoming graphics related to this visit. “Gurrane” is the local name for “Gurranebraher” one of the best known areas of Cork with majestic views of the city. Although she will only be in Cork for an afternoon it is bound to have a lasting positive effect long after she leaves. Tim O’Riordan and his band ‘Natural Gas’ has written a song that goes like this…

.

“Won’t you come up to Gurrane Lizzy Windsor, and come up to sweet Farranree

Won’t you come up to Gurrane Lizzy Windsor and look down on the banks of the Lee”

.

This is a ‘rare auld tune’ and the sentiment is a positive one – forget what’s gone on in the past and “Cead Mile Failte Your highness your visit has caused such a thrill. Hop in to me van and let me show you the view from the top of the hill”. Enjoy this video where there are lots of suggestions on what she could do while she is amongst us, such as, visiting Gurranebraher and Farranree, a sulky spin out the straight road,  bowling with the Bishop out beyond the ‘Black Man’ pub and maybe chance a pint of Tanora before a stroll down the Mardyke. All great suggestions!

UPDATE So far this royal visit is a great success, with the Queen being genuinely welcomed. My favourite part of the Queen’s speech in Dublin’s Castle was when she referred to the bonds that ordinary Irish and English people had between our two countries and that it was these ordinary connections with relatives and friends that bound us together. Today is Cork’s turn to host and let’s hope it all goes well.
