You know when you are the barbers or the hairdresser and the initial chit chat runs out you get the question – “Any holidays planned this year?” It must be part of every hairdressing course curriculum “Any holidays planned this year?” Next time you are in for a cut or a blow dry – go quiet for a while and trust me it will come.

My answer – after seeing this Art Project by the Brooklyn based artist Kevin Cyr is: I’ve reduced a custom made camper van and attached it to the top of an old bike I had lying around and I’m going to cycle around the Ring of Kerry.Oh, lovely…” (There is one exception to this; Martha’s Unisex Hair Salon, Mill Road, Killorglin, Co Kerry. Ireland.  Here you’ll find the conversation superabundant and stimulating. Appointments: 353+66+9762288)

Kevin Cyr’s work would appear to have a narrow view –  the subject that interests him seems to be old vans and campers but he creates a whole wide world within this view. Speaking about his work he says: I find beauty in derelict cars and unkempt landscapes. I have always been interested in painting vehicles and scenes… I commemorate commercial vehicles inundated with graffiti and rust, working vehicles, and well-traveled recreational vehicles. I find that there is so much character in old delivery trucks and vans — especially when covered with graffiti… Removing them from their everyday context gives them portrait-like importance. I paint with devoted attention to every imperfection and sign of age.

He works with built objects, die cast minatures, painting and drawing. He has a very interesting Camper Kart, you’ll never look at a Tesco Trolly in the same way again: Visit his website here: www.kevincyr.net/
